THIS WEEK IN ANNAPOLIS
THIS WEEK IN ANNAPOLIS:

SB 172/HB 618 passed out of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee late last night!

As amended, the bill states that all youth shall be held in a juvenile detention facility unless: (1) The youth is released on bail, recognizance or other pre-trial condition, (2) There is no capacity in the juvenile facility, (3) The court finds that detention in a secure juvenile facility would pose a risk of harm to the child or others.

Next week, it will be heard on second reader on the Senate floor.

Vote Yes on SB 172/HB 618! As your constituent, this bill is important to me because of our local jail struggles to provide the range of protections and services youth need.  Also, placing youth in adult jails does not make the community safer. Youth held in adult jails are more likely to reoffend and reoffend more violently then youth in the juvenile system.

This bill is supported by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and the Maryland Association of Correctional Administrators.

Vote YES on SB 172/HB 618.

Thank you.
