A collection of unpaid government fines turned into a death sentence for a young Aboriginal woman in Western Australia. Twenty two-year-old Julieka Dhu was of the Yatmatji nation and lived in the Pilbara region of WA. On the 2nd of August she was arrested and imprisoned at the South Hedland police watch-house for the non-payment of around $1,000 in fines. The WA government has a policy of imprisoning people for overdue fines, even for minor matters such as parking infringements. On the 4th of August, still in police custody, Dhu died. The cause of death is unclear. Dhu’s autopsy showed a head wound, bleeding in and around the lungs, two old rib fractures, and a “possible refracture.”
