Youths as young as 15 are put in solitary confinement for weeks on end, during which time there is no contact at all with the outside world. This is the situation in Denmark’s juvenile detention centres, where dozens of teenagers each year are subject to these punitive methods. They don’t have much to do with the rehabilitative function that should never be overlooked in prison, especially if the detainees are underage. Yet even the most civilised nations often hide skeletons in the closet. The practice not only violates international conventions on the rights of children but also causes serious psychological trauma, says some civil-society organisations. Anxiety, depression, self-harming behaviour and aggression are the natural consequences. It’s an intolerable situation in 2014 and the associations are calling for an immediate intervention from the Danish government. …
