“There was one inmate who had tattoos all up his neck, his beard was braided, and he read ‘Chicka Chicka Boom Boom’ like I never heard it before,” says JoAnn Barrett, recalling a few memorable moments from her three years spent being a volunteer at the Children’s Literacy Network’s Staying in Closer Touch program.

SICT is a grass-roots, nonprofit program that works one-on-one with incarcerated parents being held at the Washtenaw County Jail, the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility and the Federal Detention Center to help give their children an equal opportunity to develop a love of reading and books….
